When I double click
on the icon "Clocks.pdf", nothing happens.
There are two main possibilities why nothing happens when you click on
the icon "Clocks.pdf".
1. You do not have Adobe Acrobat reader 4.0 or above installed
on your computer.
Viewing the Antique Clocks Guide requires Adobe Acobat Reader 4.0 or
above. If you do not have Acrobat Reader installed, you will not be
able to use the Antique Clocks Guide.
Solution: Acrobat Reader is supplied on the Antique Clocks Guide
CD. To install Acrobat reader, insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive,
double clock in the CD icon "Antique Clocks Price Guide", and then double
click on reader 4.0 Installer to install Acrobat Reader.
2. You have Adobe Acrobat reader 4.0 or above installed on your
computer but have not yet used it to open the Clocks.PDF file for the
first time.
Solution: If the Acrobat Reader application is not already opened,
find the Acrobat reader program on your computer and double click its
icon to start the Acrobat reader program.
Then open the Clocks.pdf document by doing the following:
- Click the Open button (icon showing a "folder" on your
Acrobat Reader toolbar), or choose File > Open. In the Open dialog
box, select the Clocks.pdf document, and click Open.
This will "set" the Antique Clocks Guide file to be opened
automatically by Acrobat Reader from then on when you double click on
the icon "Clocks.pdf".

When I double click
on the icon "Clocks.pdf" I get an error message
When double clicking on the icon, "Clocks.pdf" some users may get an
error message telling them to "choose an application" or that "the
document Clocks.pdf could not be opened because the application that created
it could not be found", or something similar.
There are two main possibilities why you get an error message when you
click on the icon "Clocks.PDF":
2. You do have Adobe Acrobat reader 4.0 or above installed on
your computer but have not yet used it to open the Clocks.PDF file for
the first time.
Solution: A: After you have installed Acrobat Reader, return
to your "Clocks.pdf" icon and double click on it. If you get a dialog
box asking you to "choose an application", drill down through the directory
showing your files until you find Adobe Acrobat Reader, and then double
click it to open.
Solution B: Another option is to run the Acrobat Reader application
first and then open the Clocks.pdf from within Acrobat Reader.
To open the Clocks.pdf document do the following:
- Click the Open button (icon showing a "folder" on your
Acrobat Reader toolbar), or choose File > Open. In the Open dialog
box, select the Clocks.pdf document, and click Open.
The Antique Clocks Guide should now open. This will also "set"
the Antique Clocks Guide file to be opened automatically by Acrobat
Reader from then on when you double click on the icon "Clocks.pdf".

reader, click here.

Other problems
opening a program - and possible solutions.
- The program may already be open. Check your task bar at the
bottom of your screen (Windows users) or the Application menu in the
upper right corner of your screen (Macintosh users) to see which programs
are open. If you do not see Acrobat reader open, be sure to open it
and then try opening your Clocks.pdf file.
- There may not be enough memory available to open the program.
Quit any other programs you are not using and then try again. If that
doesn't work, try restarting your computer.
- The program may be damaged. If either the Clocks.pdf file or
the Adobe Acrobat Reader program are damaged, the Antique Clocks Guide
cannot be read. Try reinstalling the Acrobat Reader program from the
CD and/or run the Clocks Guide installer program again from the CD.
- The program may be incompatible with your computer. Please

requirements needed to use the Antique Clocks Guide.

401 - Authorization
Required
The creators of a Web page may want only certain people have access to
that page. There are several ways to limit access to a Web page, including
password protection. You may get the "401 - Authorization Required"
error message when you try to view a Web page with limited access. (A
Web site may have a customized version of this error message, such as
a screen saying "Access Denied" or "Unavailable.")
If you don't think you should be getting this error:
- Make sure that the Web address (or URL) that you typed in exactly
matches the address you were given. Check that the capitalization
matches, that all words are spelled properly, and that all the punctuation,
like dots (.) and slashes (/), are correctly placed. Remember, there
are no spaces allowed in Web addresses. (A proper Web address will look
like http://www.ecollectical.com).
- If you believe you should have access to the site, try sending
e-mail to whomever maintains the Web site. Their e-mail address
is often on the main page of the Web site, or you can try sending e-mail
to the "Webmaster" of the site. If the Web address is something like
http://www.xyz.com/, then the Webmaster's address will probably be "webmaster@xyz.com."
|
| Back |
|
403 - Forbidden
This standard error message is generated by Web servers when you try
to access a file that has not been correctly configured by whomever maintains
it. (The file needs to be set with "read permissions" for all users.)
All that probably means is that you can't view the page because whomever
maintains the site set it up incorrectly.
This is a configuration issue that is beyond the control of eCollectica
Publishing and the Antique Clocks Identification and Price Guide CD-ROM
and Internet resource. When we created and published your CD, all of the
links and Web site addresses were tested to make sure they were current.
However, it is the nature of the Internet that web site addresses sometimes
change or that some web sites have various technical problems that prevent
people from accessing their pages. Please report any links which no longer
function properly so that we can update future editions of the CD.
Other steps you can take:
- Make sure the Web address you typed exactly matches the Web address
you were given. Spelling, punctuation, or capitalization errors
can prevent the browser from finding the page you're looking for. (Remember,
there are no spaces allowed in Web addresses, and a proper Web address
will look like http://www.ecollectica.com).
- If you believe the Web address is correct, the problem may be with
the Web server where the Web page "lives." The server may be down
for maintenance or too many people may be trying to access the server
at once. Try connecting again later.
- Wait a moment and click the Reload button (also called the Refresh
button) to try again.
- If you still can't reach the site, send e-mail to the Webmaster
at that site with the exact error message you are receiving.

|
404 - Not Found
A 404 - Not Found error means that there was no Web page with the
name you specified at the Web site. This could happen for a variety
of reasons.
- Make sure that the Web address (URL) that you typed in exactly
matches the address you were given. Check that the capitalization
matches, that all words are spelled properly, and that all the punctuation,
like dots (.) and slashes (/), are correctly placed. Be sure you are
using the forward slash (/) and not the backward slash (\). (Remember,
there are no spaces allowed in Web addresses, and a proper Web address
will look like http://www.ecollectica.com).
- The page may have been renamed, moved, or deleted. This is
a configuration issue that is beyond the control of eCollectica Publishing
and the Antique Clocks Identification and Price Guide CD-ROM and Internet
resource. When we created and published your CD, all of the links and
Web site addresses were tested to make sure they were current. However,
it is the nature of the Internet that web site addresses sometimes change
or that some web sites have various technical problems that prevent
people from accessing their pages. Please report any links which no
longer function properly so that we can update future editions of the
CD. .
- The person maintaining the Web page may no longer have an account
at that location. While not great news, the 404 - Not Found error
tells you that that there is a Web site at that address, just not the
particular page you were looking for. You can usually poke around on
the Web site to see if the page may have been moved or renamed. This
is a configuration issue that is beyond the control of eCollectica Publishing
and the Antique Clocks Identification and Price Guide CD-ROM and Internet
resource. When we created and published your CD, all of the links and
Web site addresses were tested to make sure they were current. However,
it is the nature of the Internet that web site addresses sometimes change

people from accessing their pages. Please report any links which no

500 - Server Error
- Page Not Available
Web pages are stored on servers, machines that contain files and allow
other servers (computers) to download files from them. If the server has
been incorrectly set up or is experiencing mechanical problems, it will
return this error.
Steps you can take include:
- If you entered the URL manually, make sure it matches the URL exactly.
Spelling, punctuation, and capitalization errors can prevent you
from seeing the page you re seeking.
- If you continually receive this error message, you should wait
and try again later until the problem has been resolved by the server's
administrators. This is a configuration issue that is beyond the
control of eCollectica Publishing and the Antique Clocks Identification
and Price Guide CD-ROM and Internet resource. When we created and published
your CD, all of the links and Web site addresses were tested to make
sure they were current. However, it is the nature of the Internet that
web site addresses sometimes change or that some web sites have various
technical problems that prevent people from accessing their pages. Please
report any links which no longer function properly so that we can update
future editions of the CD.

|
501 - Not Implemented
This error is a direct result of problems in the Web page's HTML
(HyperText Markup Language). It usually occurs with Web pages that contain
forms in which you type information and send it to a third party.
Steps you can take include:
- Try contacting the Webmaster at the site. If the Web address
is something like http://www.xyz.com/ then the Webmaster's address would
be "webmaster@xyz.com."

Unable to Connect
to <Web Address>
When you receive the error message "Unable to Connect to ..."
it means your Web browser cannot get to the Web site you want. There
are a variety of reasons why this might happen:
- You may not be connected to the Internet through your ISP.
- If you were connected, your connection may have been interrupted without
your knowing it.
- The Web address you typed may be incorrect.
- The Web site may have moved or may no longer exist.
- The Web server may be shut down or busy.
- There might even be network problems on the Internet.
Steps you can take include:
- Try connecting to other Web sites. If you can connect to other
sites, the problem is probably with that one site so try again later.
If you're having problems connecting to other sites though, you might
be having a problem with your computer or your connection to the Internet.
Try restarting your computer and reconnecting to the Internet.
- Make sure that the Web address (or URL) that you typed exactly
matches the address you were given. Check that the capitalization
matches, that all words are spelled properly, and that all the punctuation,
like dots (.) and slashes (/), are correctly placed.
- If you believe the URL is correct, the problem may be with the
Web server. The server may be down, or too many people may be trying
to access the server at once. Wait a moment and click the Reload button
to try again or waitr a few minutes and try again.

Too Much Network
Traffic
When you receive the error message "Too Much Network Traffic,"
it means that the Web page you are trying to see has too many other people
already connected to it. Occasionally, you'll get this message when there's
a problem with your cache (temporary files your
Web browser keeps to speed things up).
Steps you can take include:
- Use the Reload button to try to connect to the site again, or wait
and try again later.
- Clear your Web browser's disk cache. For instructions on clearing
your browser's cache, click here.
- Try connecting to other Web sites. If you can connect to other
sites, the problem is probably with that one site so try again later.
If you're having problems connecting to other sites though, you might
be having a problem with your connection or your computer.

Can't Parse http
Nearly every instance of "Can't Parse HTTP" occurs because your Web browser
can't figure out the Web address (the URL) you typed. While most browsers
allow you to leave off the "http://" before a Web address, some browsers
require it.
Steps you can take include:
- Make sure the Web address you typed exactly matches the Web address
you were given. Spelling, punctuation, or capitalization errors
can prevent the browser from finding the page you're seeking. (Remember,
there are no spaces allowed in Web addresses. A proper Web address will
look like http://www.ecollectica.com).
- Use the Reload button to try to connect to the site again, or wait
and try again later.
- Clear your Web browser's disk cache.
Depending on the browser, you will choose a menu item called "Preferences"
or "Options." Look for an option for "Advanced" or "Browser" features,
then press the button that says "Purge Cache," "Clear Cache," or "Empty
Cache."
- Try connecting to other Web sites. If you can connect to other
sites, the problem is probably with that one site so try again later.
If you're having problems connecting to other sites though, you might
be having a problem with your computer or your connection to the Internet.
Try restarting your computer and reconnecting to the Internet.

I get "broken"
or missing images when I am on the online portion of the guide.
Tip: Because the Antique Clocks Guide has
thousands of graphics, you may need to empty your
web browser's Cache every so often.
- Solution 1: Try clicking the "Reload" or "Refresh"
button in your web browser's toolbar. This will help with occasional
problems with broken or missing images.
- Solution 2: If you get broken or missing images very often,
try clearing your web browser's cache (also called "Internet Files"
in Internet Explorer)
About your web browser's cache
The Cache folder is the location on your hard disk where web pages
and files (such as graphics) are stored as you view them. This speeds
up the display of pages you frequently visit or have already seen,
because your web browser can open them from your hard disk instead
of downloading them again each time from the web. The more space you
allow in this folder, the faster previously visited pages are displayed.
However, keep in mind that increasing the size of the cache folder
takes up more space on your computer. You can adjust the size of this
folder, or empty it, to control how much space it uses on your hard
disk.
The links below will take you to instructions on how to clear your
browser's cache. We have included some of the more widely used web
browsers. If you do not find your web browser version listed, look
for instructions on how to clear your cache in your web bowser's Help
file
